Cobalt blue hand-painted pottery serveware

The Pottery House

Jaipur Blue Pottery

A craft that travelled from Persia to the courts of Jaipur, painted by hand in the colours of sky, river, sunflower and leaf.

The Craft

A Royal Craft, Painted by Hand

Blue pottery came to Jaipur under the patronage of its Maharajas and became one of Rajasthan's most treasured arts.

Unlike ordinary ceramics, it is not made from clay. Artisans mix quartz stone powder, glass and fuller's earth, shape each piece by hand, paint it freehand with mineral colours and fire it at a low temperature. The result is a glassy, jewel-bright finish that no machine can copy.

From Stone to Glaze

How a Plate is Made

Each piece passes through many hands over many days.

1

Mixing

Quartz powder, glass and fuller's earth are kneaded into a dough.

2

Moulding

The dough is pressed into moulds and left to dry in the sun.

3

Painting

Motifs are painted freehand with brushes and mineral colours.

4

Glazing

A clear glaze is applied for that signature glassy shine.

5

Firing

Pieces are fired at a low temperature and cooled slowly.

Care Guide

Caring for Your Pottery

Everyday cleaning
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth or wash gently by hand with mild soap. Avoid scrubbers and harsh detergents, which can dull the glaze.
Microwave & dishwasher
Blue pottery is fired at a low temperature, so keep it out of the microwave, oven and dishwasher. This keeps the colours bright for years.
Serving food
Perfect for dry snacks, fruit, sweets and display. For hot or acidic food we recommend using it as a charger or decorative piece.
Why no two pieces match
Every motif is painted freehand, so the brushwork, colour depth and size vary slightly from piece to piece. That is the mark of a true handmade object.
